Abstract
This paper analyzes the US Airport Improvement Program as it relates to the US Federal Aviation Administration’s strategic goals for its allocation to general aviation airports for safety-related purposes. The data used describe airports’ characteristics, approach slope conditions based on 5010 master records, and Airport Improvement Program grant histories. The key findings include that between fiscal years 2008 and 2009 there was an increase in airports included in the National Plan of Integrated Airports that received AIP funding, and double the number of obstructed approach slopes. However, an increase in AIP money allocation to general aviation airports as a whole existed but not an increase to obstructions removal projects.
